Uppsala Centralstation has gotten a modern rebuild. The new central station is located in a modern buildning with shops, restaurant and SJ and UL stores.
SJ [url=http://www.sj.se]]operates a fast service from Stockholm to Uppsala every hour, peak hours every half-hour, which takes 40 minutes and costs 108 SEK (84 SEK if bought from the vending machines using your credit card). Alternatively, SL [url=http://www.sl.se[/url]]runs a half-hourly stopping service from Stockholm as part of their suburban rail network, taking 55 minutes and costing 110 SEK or 65 SEK for people under 20, though if you have an SL travelcard, this is reduced to 60 SEK or 35 SEK for people under 20. In general, SJ offers more comfortable trains with equipped with better seats, power sockets, tables and lavatories and free wireless internet in some trains.
All trains from Norrland, including Sundsvall and the over-night trains from Luleå and Narvik also call here. However, for the vast majority of travelers coming from southern Sweden, a change of trains in Stockholm is required.
A few private companies also traffic Uppsala, during winter Veolia[6[/url] runs night-trains to the northen ski resorts that calls here as well as the luxury first-class only Blå Tåget [7] from Gothenburg via Stockholm.
For those really on a budget, Uppsala is accessible by bus. Swebus runs coaches from [wiki=fcfff492e00727b63cf5dff9f59bc2a4]Stockholm[/wiki]'s City Terminalen (although the price is almost the same as with the train), as well as [wiki=7e268c60ba15269bd8aafe315096ecc2]Gothenburg[/wiki], [wiki=4bd558d16c70e98fe49d40beb25da844]Malmö[/wiki] and other cities in [wiki=c8f4261f9f46e6465709e17ebea7a92b]Sweden[/wiki]. Also, Bus4You runs coaches on the route Göteborg - Stockholm - Uppsala with one-way tickets from Stockholm to Uppsala for 39kr [http://www.bus4you.se/].

Uppsala is located along one major highway, the E4. The north-south highway passes to the east of the city and stretches south to [wiki=fcfff492e00727b63cf5dff9f59bc2a4]Stockholm[/wiki], [wiki=e9be62049966688cb3823591fc3fb211]Norrköping[/wiki], and all the way to [wiki=e70463985ec0df2dfd04711a244a44e0]Helsingborg[/wiki] in southern Sweden. Likewise it continues north past [wiki=89d4cddfa38114a4f1e54ecef385fb3d]Sundsvall[/wiki] and [wiki=632595dcfd234ec2ce1e5d49929c4777]Umeå[/wiki] all the way to the Finnish border at [wiki=80bf7229add86b15dc9bbcee6cf96cef]Haparanda[/wiki]. The national roads 55 and 72 carry traffic to [wiki=1efb518d806e7271fd678f5ae8fe4007]Enköping[/wiki] and[[Sala]. The smaller national road 290 to [wiki=5bef376990c3bf117e3cd77fd4e65f57]Österbybruk[/wiki] and Forsmark Power Plant, respectively 288 to [wiki=bffe2dc9c5d053e1b29c553e38681c57]Östhammar[/wiki].
With no airport of its own, Uppsala is served by the same airports that serve Stockholm city.
* [wiki=cd5af02c1482df3b11dd8bc2a118e51f]Stockholm-Arlanda Airport[/wiki] (ARN), 35 km south of Uppsala, about halfway to [wiki=fcfff492e00727b63cf5dff9f59bc2a4]Stockholm[/wiki]. It's a hub for SAS and served by most main European airlines and a number of Asian and American carriers. From there trains, buses, rental cars and taxis will be waiting to whisk you away - which one to take is up to you.
**The standard option is the SL suburban train which takes 17 minutes and costs SEK 165 one-way for adults, SEK 129 for people 18-20 and SEK 54 for people under 18 (if you have a teenage appearance, you can easily claim to be under 18 and get a cheaper ticket). The train leaves Arlanda on weekdays every half hour between 05:16 and 00:46 and on weekends from 04:50 to 01:57. The station is called Arlanda Central (the airport has 3 stations) and is located under Sky City, between terminals 4 and 5. Tickets are available from the information desks in the airport (either in the arrival area or in front of the station). In Uppsala, you may buy tickets from the 'UL Travelcenter' within the building (Resecentrum). You can buy tickets from either the blue or gray machines inside the station, but you have to check if it is for the SL or SJ trains (see below).
**UL buses also exist, also departing every half-hour, from in front of terminals 2, 4 and 5. They cost SEK 80 if bought in advance and SEK 100 if bought on the day, and take 40 minutes to arrive in front of the Central Station in Uppsala. Tickets can be bought at either the Information Desk in front of the exits from Terminals 2 and 5, or from the driver. They run round-the-clock and might be your only option between midnight and 5 or 6AM, even though they take far longer to arrive in Uppsala. Note that if you buy your ticket on the bus, you cannot pay by cash.
**In addition to the SL suburban train, there are a (small) number of long-distance and regional trains calling at both Arlanda and Uppsala. These trains are operated by SJ, the national train company. Tickets are usually more expensive than in the case of SL (around 170 SEK one way - there is no fixed price, as SJ uses an airline-style flexible demand-based system), but can be significantly cheaper (down to ca. 80 SEK) if booked well in advance. Tickets can be bought in similar fashion as in the case of the SL suburban train (SL trains use the UL machines), plus from the blue or gray machines available in Uppsala Central Station. Note however that there is a 100 SEK surcharge if you buy the ticket onboard the train.
**Taxis are available in front of both terminals 2, 4 and 5. They offer fixed prices to Uppsala (usually denoted by a large 'Fast Pris Uppsala-Arlanda/Arlanda-Uppsala' sign near the back of the car). This usually amounts to 400-500 SEK for 1-4 persons, making it a cost-effective option for 3-4 persons (especially if factoring in public transport costs within Uppsala city). You must ask for the fixed price before commencing the journey, otherwise the driver might employ the per-km charge, that usually amounts to far more.
*If using Ryanair or Wizzair or other similar budget carriers, they serve Skavsta Airport (NYO), in Nyköping, about 170 km south of Uppsala. From there, take local bus 515 or 715 (NOT the airport coaches) to Nyköping Central Station and change to a regional train to Uppsala (sometimes direct, but often with a change in Stockholm). This costs in total 119 SEK (101 SEK for people under 20) and takes around 2 hours to Uppsala.
*Ryanair also serves Stockholm Västerås airport in [wiki=a18242b6e21f6965edea0101b7157053]Västerås[/wiki] 80 km west of Uppsala, to a handful of destinations in Britain and Spain. Getting to Uppsala was relatively easy in the past, as a direct shuttle used to exist. Right now, however, the most convenient option is taking local bus 3 to Västerås central station (15 min) and change for UL bus 773 (every hour, peak hours every half-hour) that takes you to Uppsala in 75-80 min. The total price is 160 SEK (93 SEK for people under 20)
The best way to travel in Uppsala is by bike. As any visitor will notice, there are a lot of cyclists here, enough so for the city to earn the nickname "Bike Town." There are paths paralleling nearly every road, and many places to store them outside. Several rental places exist in town. As a side note, locals have a saying that everyone who lives there has had a bike stolen at some point in their lives. While this is not entirely true (it's more a reflection on the popularity of biking than any level of crime), it's probably a good idea to lock your bike.
Uppsala boasts an excellent bus system [http://www.ul.se], and you're never more than a few hundred meters from the closest bus stop. A ticket on a green "Stadstrafiken" (city traffic) bus costs SEK 35 when bought from the driver. Tickets are otherwise sold at vending machines near many of the major bus stops. It's not possible to pay cash on the bus. Consider buying a värdekort if you're staying a few days; they're prepaid, refillable (in any amount) bus cards, and by using it the price lowers to SEK 18 per trip.
If you would like to travel by taxi, use the four major taxi companies: Uppsala Taxi, Taxi Kurir, Taxi Direkt and Taxi 020. There are also a lot of smaller companies, but they might have their own view on what you should pay and might also have less geographical knowledge. Be sure to negotiate the fare in advance of getting in the taxi if no guaranteed fare is posted.
